PURPOSE OF POSITION
Advisors are responsible for informing prospective, new, returning and current students of academic programs, degree and career options, registration processes, college policies, and transfer procedures while providing excellent customer service to their assigned student caseload. Advisors will collaborate with students, faculty, staff, administrators and community partners in a proactive case management process to facilitate the development of intentional educational and career plans to help students achieve their academic, personal and professional goals. Advisors play an essential role in the implementation of student services activities to increase retention rates, course completion rates and/or transfer to either a college/university, or the workforce.
1. Academic Advising (60 - 70%)
1.1. Advise students on educational offerings that CCC offers based on student's interest and goals.
1.2. Determine student's placement in math and writing or review transcripts for placement.
1.3. Educate students on prerequisites and degree requirements.
1.4. Discuss employment experience, career survey results, employment outlook, expected salary
1.5. Inform students of the community resources on campus & off campus to support them with their educational success.
1.6. Recommend coursework to meet student and community needs in the employment area they are seeking.
1.7. Serve as advisor to student cohorts, maintain relationships with assigned departments areas on campus, train incoming academic and career coaches on content specific to cohort related areas.
1.8. Utilize available and appropriate technology, including Colleague, Navigate, Outlook, etc. to: monitor academic progress of students toward degree and/or certificate completion, identify current and potential academic needs, document ongoing case management activities, and document all pertinent student information and status updates.
2. Conduct Assessments (20%)
2.1. Conduct Assessments to determine training, educational, career, and personal needs, including reviewing placement, career assessments, work history, and college transcripts, and referring students with barriers to their success to the appropriate resources on and off campus.
2.2. Plan, design, and present educational/career/job search/training programs and workshops.
2.3. Discuss and analyze what the student's goals are, and how they are going to reach them, by learning about the whole student; work history, personal needs, college history, barriers to success, etc. Determine what academic supports are needed for the student to be successful.
2.4. Guide them through CCC processes and assist them in getting started.
2.5. Educate new students by presenting at New Student Advising Sessions.
3. General Student Support (10 - 20%)
3.1. Help students needing requisites and placement by reviewing external and internal transcripts.
3.2. Develop and update New Student Advising Session presentation for students and faculty related to transferring, career exploration, choosing a major, planning the next term, how to succeed, and more.
3.3. Work with students on Academic Standing (students on alert, probation, or suspension).
3.4. Work with student on Student Planning and record details in Colleague. Ensure the planning meets the requirements for financial aid appeals and extensions and the student is aware of the processes.
3.5. Use Navigate to report on all student appointments and drop in meetings and create appointments for students. When appropriate, create referrals for follow up to ensure student success.
3.6. Inform, support and collaborate with faculty advisors in cohort area to ensure all students receive timely and accurate advising for their goals.
3.7. May coordinate visits with 4-year college and university partners.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, other agencies, and the general public.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
- Participate in college committees when requested.
- Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
- Maintain student confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related college, state, and federal standards, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- This role will work our STEM students from their first term of enrollment through graduation, as well as student in all our other programs including undecided students.

Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, sociology, business, public administration, or related field AND at least 3 years of directly related work experience, including experience working with diverse and underserved populations. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described.
Thorough knowledge of college academic programs and procedure, career development principles and practices, registration processes, and relationships between various levels of education and business partners. Strong knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, internet, and email applications.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with a proven ability to disseminate complex information to small and large groups with proper mechanics in the English language. Strong interpersonal skills including successful collaboration, customer service and public speaking.
Ability to exemplify traits that reflect the College's culture, including integrity, a customer service orientation, cultural competency, trustworthiness, flexibility and a willingness to change.
- Experience working in a higher education setting.
- Experience with enrollment and admissions processes and/or advising and career services.
- Ability to communicate effectively with English language learners.
- Knowledge of FERPA requirements.
- Experience working with veteran and/or first-generation college students.
- Bi-lingual Spanish with experience presenting information to small and large groups in this language.
- Master's degree in Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling, or related field.
- Global Career Development Facilitator Certificate.
