A. POSITION PURPOSE

The Director, Sports Medicine is responsible for assisting in the developing, coordinating, and administering of all aspects of a Division I sports medicine program that serves approximately 425 intercollegiate student athletes. This includes administrative duties as well as any and all aspects relative to provide comprehensive, evidenced-based health care to SCU student-athletes. This individual will be responsible for maintaining a working relationship with student health services, team physicians, physical therapists, other health care professionals, coaches and parents of student athletes. The person in this position is responsible for abiding by all WCC and NCAA regulations and assisting to ensure departmental compliance.

B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Prevention and Care of Student-Athlete Injuries and Illnesses

Represent Santa Clara University as the certified athletic trainer for assigned SCU athletic sanctioned events. This may include on or off campus practices, events, and/or competitions. Travel may be required.
Conduct injury prevention assessments.
Design and implement individualized injury prevention programs for student-athletes.
Collect and evaluate injury prevention, performance, and/or injury record data.
Evaluate injuries and/or illnesses for student-athletes. Refer to other medical personnel when professionally indicated.
Design and implement treatment and/or rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries.
Communicate with medical personnel regarding the medical care and treatment of athletic related injuries and/or illnesses. Create injury management plans that may include doctor visits, x-rays/scans, medical exams/studies, rehabilitation programs, and/or surgery for injured student-athletes.
Provide onsite emergency care at assigned SCU athletic sanctioned practices, events, and/or competitions.
Abide by all SCU sports medicine protocols.
Maintain clinical affiliations with accredited regional and national universities supporting programs in athletic training education. Serve as an approved preceptor for athletic training students from those programs.
Serves as a primary advisor to the coaching staff in conjunction with the sports performance coach for managing the practice and game load management and other relevant key performance indicators that affect player availability through the use of sport science technology (eg., Catapult, subjective questionnaires, etc.)

2. Program Direction and Administration

Serve as a member of the Senior Staff for the Sports Medicine department that problem-solves and advises the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Health, Wellness, & Performance in policy-making and operations decisions for the sports medicine department.
Conduct an annual review of current policies and procedures.
Provide direction of external operations for the Sports Medicine department.

3. Staff Oversight

Provide oversight and direction to assigned sports medicine staff members
Provide mentorship to sports medicine staff members and students
Conduct annual performance reviews for all assigned staff members

4. Physician Clinic Coordinator/Medication Dispensing Program

Coordinate with team physician group to schedule weekly on-campus physician clinics
Manage the on-campus physician clinics (eg., patient check-in/registration, documentation, physician assistance with in-office procedures, coordinate referrals, etc.)
Communicate relevant information from appointments to the appropriate medical staff
Under the direction of the team physician and university EHS, ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding inventory procurement, disposal, and policies of the medication dispensing program.
Manage security system for Sports Medicine locks and cabinets.

5. Emergency Action Planning/Continuing Education

Update the athletic department emergency action plans.
Coordinate and manage annual in-services to review and rehearse emergency action plans and emergency conditions (eg., cardiac conditions, asthma, heat illness, traumatic brain injury, etc.)
Maintain documentation of completion of staff in-services

6. OSHA/Bloodborne Pathogen Coordinator

Conduct annual training to ensure staff and athletic training students are blood borne pathogen certified.
Work with environmental health and safety manager to ensure training room compliance.

7. Auxiliary Program Coordination

Manage the oversight, ordering, and inventory for the departments Coca-Cola (Powerade) consumable product (eg., Powerade, protein drinks, etc.)
Manage the oversight, ordering, and inventory for the departments Coca-Cola (Powerade) sideline product (eg., coolers, carts, towels, etc.)
Manage the oversight, ordering, and inventory for the departments DME equipment (eg., braces, ambulatory assistance devices, etc.)

8. Sport Science & Technology Integration

Coordinate implementation, updates, and access to sports medicine technology platforms and the designated electronic medical records system
Coordinate implementation, updates, and access to sport science technology platforms

9. Other duties as assigned

Attend continuing education symposiums as required to maintain BOC certification.
Serve on relative university committees to provide support and direction for SCU students.

C. PROVIDES SUPERVISION

Provides supervision and work direction to full-time athletic training staff, athletic training students and student assistants.
Provide mentorship to sports medicine staff members and students
Conduct annual performance reviews for all assigned staff members

D. GENERAL GUIDELINES

Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services. Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices; implements approved recommendations. Maintains contact with student-athletes and solicits feedback for improved services. Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools, planned training, and performance initiatives. Researches and develops resources that create timely and efficient workflow. Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals. Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions. Prepares and submits reports as requested and required. Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

E. QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires the ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

1. Knowledge

BOC, CPR, First Aid and BBP certification required.
Knowledge of FERPA, OSHA, and HIPPA bylaws.
CSCS certification preferred.

Basic computer skills required

3. Abilities

Ability to provide evidenced-based service.
Ability to evaluate, recognize, manage, provide treatment, and design rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries and illnesses.
Ability to assist in policy and procedure development.
Ability to utilize technology effectively in all aspects of the development and administration of a sports medicine department.
Ability to communicate effectively and work within an interdisciplinary team to provide holistic patient care.

4. Education

Bachelor's required in related health field, advanced degree and certification in related field preferred.

5. Years of Experience

5-7 years of relative experience preferred.
