Recreation Associate - Aquatics (Part-Time)

DESCRIPTION

We are in search of Lifeguards, Swim Instructors and Pool Managers. Must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, early morning, evening, and weekend shifts when required, and attend weekly in-service trainings, depending on the needs of the Parks & Recreation Services Department. Upon hire, a mandatory training for all Aquatic staff will take place the week of June 19, 2023. We also require valid certification(s) by time of hire. We are offering a Lifeguard Certification class from April 3-7, 2023. Register for the class here!

Temporary part-time employees are considered to be at-will, and are not covered by the City's Civil Service System. No benefits are afforded to temporary employees, with the exception of sick leave and temporary retirement plan.

Qualified applicants will have a proven track record of demonstrating the following competencies:

    TYPICAL TASKS
    Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

    Lifeguard/ Swim Instructor:
  • Develop and execute swim lesson plans for kids and adults of all abilities.
  • Instructing and interacting with aquatic program participants of all ages
  • Complete and distribute swim progress report cards.
  • Scanning designated swim area constantly to ensure patron safety.
  • Assures that the policies and rules are adhered to in and around the pool areas.
  • Work as a team with other Lifeguards/ Swim Instructors in order to ensure water safety.
  • Assist in identifying and correcting hazardous conditions and unsafe practices.
  • Provides excellent customer service to the public and relays any citizen concerns to direct supervisor.
  • Perform Life saving measures when required within the standards of American Red Cross.
  • Collects admission fees, prepares daily reconciliation and bank deposit.
  • Assist in implementing emergency procedures in case of accident or injury.
  • Attend all staff meetings and trainings.

    Pool Manager:
  • Assist the Aquatic Coordinator in developing staff training curriculum and participate in mandatory staff training.
  • Schedule staff for open recreation, aquatic programming, and swim lessons. Ensure that safe practices and appropriate instruction are being followed during aquatic programs.
  • Develop swim lesson plans and swim lesson instruction. Ensure that aquatic staff completes and distributes swim progress report cards. Lead pool and facility maintenance as necessary.
  • Assure that pool managers implement policies and rules in and around the pool areas.
  • Assist in identifying and correcting hazardous conditions and unsafe practices.
  • Assist pool managers with staff discipline and corrective behavior plans.
  • Implement emergency procedures in case of accident or injury. Communicate to the Aquatic Coordinator any maintenance required on any part of the facility, equipment or materials.
  • Respond to citizen concerns and involve direct supervisor if necessary.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Lifeguard:
  • Possession of a valid certification as a Lifeguard at time of hire is desirable. Certifications must be from American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, YMCA, or StarGuard Elite. This includes Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid for Public Safety Personnel - Title 22 (certification must be obtained during your first summer worked)
  • Possession of a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and/or experience working as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.
  • Possession of a CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification is required
  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old at time of hire.

    Swim Instructor:
  • Possession of a CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification is required
  • Possession of a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and/or experience working as a lifeguard or swim instructor is desirable.
  • Applicants must be at least 15 years old at time of hire.

    Pool Manager:
  • Three years supervisory experience in an aquatic environment Experience in developing and instruction of swim lessons
  • Possession of a valid certification as a Lifeguard at time of hire is required. Certifications must be from American Red Cross, Ellis and Associates, YMCA, or StarGuard Elite. This includes Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • Possession of a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate and experience as a Swim Instructor is highly desirable.
  • Applications must be at least 18 years of age with a minimum of a High School Diploma (or equivalent).

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of modern water safety practices and accepted lifesaving and lifeguarding techniques; current principles and the performance of first aid techniques; ability to take direction and be flexible
